I enjoy running around the mountains. Here are some lists of mountains I’ve climbed, attempted or want to do. The dates listed are either the date of my first summit or the date of the last attempt. Some, like EEOR and Mt. St. Piran have become perennial favourites of mine. For a scrambling guide, I highly recommend (as do many others) Alan Kane’s “Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies”, the new edition. Here is a link to it on Amazon, though I encourage you to support Mountain Equipment Co-Op by buying the book from them.

Climbers on a morraine approaching the north glacier of Mount Athabasca. (August 2010)

  • Mount Chester (3,054m) – September 30, 2012
  • Mount Kerr (2,863m) – September 1, 2012 (“Kane Summit” only; main summit unfinished)
  • Mount Temple (3,543m) – August 11, 2012
  • The Fortress (3000m) – July 21, 2012
  • Mount Rundle, Main (2949m) – July 29, 2010
  • Fairview Mountain, (2744m) – July 13, 2010
  • Mount Yamnuska (2240m) – June 13, 2010
  • Mount Rundle, East (2590m) – July 1, 2010 (attempted March 6, 2010; repeated October 11, 2010, May 15, 2011, September 23, 2012)
  • Mount St. Piran (2649m) – June 28, 2010
  • Heart Mountian (2135m) – April 17, 2010 (attempted February 20, 2010)
  • Ha Ling Peak (2408m) – September 13, 2009 (also December 10, 2011)

Alpine climbs:

  • Mt. Athabasca (3491m) – August 16, 2010
    • I climbed Mt. Athabasca during the ‘Snow and Ice Long Weekend’ course from Yamnuska Mountain Adventures. They’re an excellent guiding outfit and highly recommended. There are other companies that offer climbing instruction, but none with the reputation of YMA! (and they didn’t even pay me to say that!)

Attempted scrambles:

  • Nihahi Ridge (2530m) – August 2009 (south shoulder only; went to south summit July 7, 2012, September 22, 2012)
  • Tangle Ridge (3000m) – August 2011 (aborted after falling during creek crossing; those of you who know this route will be laughing right now)
  • Mt. Kidd, North (2958m) – August 2011 (turned north too soon; aborted due to approaching bad weather)

Having completed three from my to-do list, including another 11,000er (Chester, Fortress, and Temple) and being comfortable soloing ‘moderate’ routes, my goals for 2013 are mostly iconic mountains. I am not in any hurry to complete the “Kane List”, especially since I have started backpacking, rock climbing, and ice climbing. There are plans for mountaineering and maybe some adventure racing too, so cuts to the amount of scrambling time I have are inevitable.

Scrambles to-do:

  • Grotto Mountain (2,706m)
  • Mount Lady MacDonald (2,606m)
  • Mount Baldy (2,192m)
  • Mount Sparrowhawk (3,121m)
  • Mount Kidd, South (2,895m)
  • Mount Indefatigable (2,670m)
  • Cascade Mountain. (2,998m)
  • Sheol Mountain (2,776m)
  • Eiffel Peak (3,084m)
